Colorado Rapids acquire striker Joe Mason on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers FC

Colorado Rapids Soccer Club announced today the acquisition of striker Joe Mason, using targeted allocation money, from English Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. on a one-year loan agreement. Mason will be added to the Rapids’ roster upon receipt of his ITC (International Transfer Certificate) and P-1 visa.

“There’s no doubt that Joe will be a major boost to our front line,” said Rapids Executive Vice President & General Manager, Pádraig Smith. “His finishing and movement in and around the box is very intelligent. He’ll not only help us from a goal scoring standpoint, but he’s also the type of player who makes those around him better. We look forward to welcoming him to Colorado.”

Mason joins a growing list of high-profile international signings for the Rapids, Danny Wilson, Tommy Smith, Jack Price, Johan Blomberg and United States Men’s National Team wingback Edgar Castillo. A traditional number nine, Mason will feature alongside an attacking front that includes fellow forwards Dominique Badji, Stefan Aigner, and Jack McBean.

During his time in the English Championship, Mason found the back of the net on 42 occasions, averaging a goal in every 2.88 games.

Prior to signing with Wolves, Mason spent five seasons with fellow Championship side Cardiff City, scoring 22 goals in 97 appearances. During his time under contract with the Welsh side, Mason spent the better part of two seasons on loan with Bolton Wanderers, scoring 10 goals in 28 appearances for The Trotters across all competitions.

Mason got his start in soccer with hometown team Plymouth Argyle, joining the club’s youth academy at the age of 10. A fan-favorite, Mason would go on to make his senior debut on December 5, 2009 in a home clash with Sheffield United. His first senior team goal came on February 27, 2010, also against Sheffield United.

Born in England but eligible to play for the Republic of Ireland, Mason has featured for the country’s U-18, U-19, and U-21 national teams, scoring three goals in 12 total appearances.

“This is an exciting new chapter of my career,” said Mason. “I’m very grateful for the support shown by everyone at Wolves during my time there, but the Rapids are an ambitious club and I can’t wait to get to Colorado, meet the guys, and help this team reach its goals.”
