Headline of the Day | Belgium's 'Golden Generation' claim third place at World Cup
Belgium clinched their best finish in a World Cup Saturday with a 2-0 win over England in St. Petersburg.
The Red Devils were the better team from start to finish despite the Three Lions dominating possession in the second half. Belgium's Thomas Meunier opened scoring less than four minutes into the game when he beat England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to give Belgium a lead they would never relinquish.
England had a chance to counter with a brilliant opportunity in the 67th minute, but Eric Dier had his effort cleared off the line by Tottenham teammate Toby Alderweireld.
The game was put to bed in the 82nd minute when Belgium captain Eden Hazard coolly fired a low shot into the bottom left corner to give the Red Devils the late insurance strike. Belgium's 'Golden Generation' leave Russia with a third place medal.
Despite failing to score against Belgium, Harry Kane is still the heavy favorite to win the Golden Boot in Russia. His six goals are three more than France's Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe entering Sunday's final.
