Rapids Wrap Up Spanish Preseason Trip With Loss to Eibar; Finish Preseason 2-2-0

BERGARA Spain (Colorado Rapids Media Relations) - The Colorado Rapids were defeated by SD Eibar 8-2 today in a game played at Agorrosin Stadium in the city of Bergara Spain.

The game which was surrounded by unusual circumstances finished with a 2-1 score at halftime and went into a totally different direction in the second half.

The first sign of trouble appeared even before the game started when home team officials announced that the referee group was down to only the center referee and that both linesmen and the fourth official would not show up for the match.

In the spirit of international courtesy and with the need of playing time for the roster's players Head Coach Fernando Clavijo decided to have his team play the game. Without the linesman and with the high pace of the match the game quickly dropped from an international friendly level to just another scrimmage.

The Rapids went up in the 13th minute when Clint Mathis sent a perfect through ball to Jean Philippe Peguero. The Haitian striker collected the ball and curved a cross to the far post of the home team’s penalty area. Dedi Ben-Dayan met the cross and finished with an accurate header to the far post of the goal.

The equalizer came five minutes later when a long ball left an Eibar forward alone in front of Joe Cannon. The striker who appeared to be offsides by at least two feet ahead of the Rapids defenders crossed his shot to the far post for the tally.

The game turned extremely hard-fought in the center of the field where the battle for the possession of the ball elevated into a constant fouling cycle that the referee was unable to control.

Eibar scored their second of the night off a corner kick after a couple of headers inside of the Rapids' area left the ball loose in the close proximity of Cannon’s goal. Eibar’s midfielder one-timed the ball and beat Cannon from close range to send the teams into the locker rooms at halftime with the score 2-1 in favor of the Spanish side.

The second half started with the news that the home team had provided two makeshift linesmen to assist the center referee.

Eibar quickly added to their lead netting three unanswered goals at the beginning of the second half.

The second goal for the Rapids came in the 75th minute when Eric Denton sent a long ball to Mathis who trapped it at the top of the penalty area and scored by sending a low shot to the far post.

Eibar was able to score three more unanswered goals however before the end of the match.

The Rapids will train tomorrow morning at Lezama and will travel back to Colorado on Friday.

The team will return to regular training at the club's facilities in Westminster on Monday March 27th in preparation for their Season Opener against Houston on Sunday April 2nd.
