Ten things to know ahead of Vancouver Whitecaps FC vs. Colorado Rapids

Ahead of Saturday’s first of two trips to Vancouver Whitecaps FC (Altitude 8:00 p.m MT), here are 10 things that you may, or may not, have known.

1. This game will come exactly five years after the two teams first met in MLS, on July 9, 2011. The Rapids won 2-1, thanks to goals from Conor Casey and Scott Palguta.

2. Colorado enjoys an 8-5-1 record against the Whitecaps. That stat is aided by an impressive 6-1-0 run at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

3. Saturday’s encounter will be an eighth for the Rapids at BC Place. Their record in British Columbia is 2-4-1. Their last win inside the home of the Whitecaps came on April 5, 2014.

4. Vancouver has won the last two games against the Rapids at home, and shutout Colorado on each occasion.

5. The Whitecaps are back inside BC Place following mixed fortunes on the road in recent weeks. They won 3-2 at Philadelphia Union (June 25), before losing 2-0 at LA Galaxy on 4th July. That was the first time the Whitecaps had been shutout in MLS play since April 16.

6. This game against the Rapids is the first of three successive home games in the league for the Whitecaps. They actually play four in a row at home, if you include the friendly with Crystal Palace.

7. Vancouver’s 27 goals is fourth best in the Western Conference and, despite Monday’s reversal at the Galaxy, they outshot LA 26-9.

8. A threat they may be offensively, but no side has conceded more goals (31) than Vancouver in MLS. They are equal in goals against with New York City FC and New England Revolution.

9. Vancouver has scored eight more goals than the Rapids, though they have played one game more. But, they have leaked 20 more goals than Colorado in that time.

10. Pedro Morales leads the Whitecaps’ scoring charts with six goals, followed by Christian Bolaños and Kekuta Manneh (both 5). The club’s leading scorer from 2015, Octavio Rivero, was this week traded to Chilean club Colo-Colo.
