Headline of the Day | Germany crash out of the World Cup with loss to South Korea
For the third consecutive men’s World Cup, the defending champions have been eliminated in the group stage as Germany fell to South Korean 2-0 on Wednesday. The two goals for the Koreans came as Germany pushed numbers forward late in the match, the 2014 champs needing a win to advance. The result meant that for the first time in World Cup history, Germany failed to get out of their group. Consequently, Germany's loss sent Mexico through to the knockout rounds despite their 3-0 loss to Sweden, who finished at the top of Group F.
"How do we go from here? We’ll have to talk about it calmly and I think it’s premature for me to say something," Germany head coach Joachim Low said. "It will take me some hours to come to terms with it and I’m incredibly disappointed by this elimination."
Brazil finished at the top of Group E thanks to goals from Paulinho and Thiago Silva that sealed a 2-0 victory over Serbia. They will now face Mexico in the Round of 16 on Monday.
Despite the manic final moments against Costa Rica, a 2-2 draw was enough to see Switzerland advance to Round of 16, in Group E. The Swiss will face Sweden in the Round of 16 on Tuesday.
