The Colorado Rapids U-23s picked up a 3-3 draw on the road on June 28 against Albuquerque Sol, and fell 4-3 in their second game to the Sol on June 30.
In the first match, the teams entered the locker room scoreless at the half. The scoreline remained the same until Albuquerque’s Luke Lawrence volleyed home a cross in the 54th minute to put the Sol ahead. Albuquerque doubled their lead in the 64th minute when Isaiah Madrid intercepted a turnoverand found the back of the net with a shot from outside of the 18-yard box.
Four minutes later, the Rapids found got back into the match after Andre Bava Shinyashiki was able to break away from the Sol’s backline to go one-on-one with Sol’s goalkeeper Ezequiel Gasson.
Albuquerque put away their third goal to make the score 3-1 in the 81st minute after Charles Touche snuck past the Rapids defense and tucked one away with a right-footed shot from the top of the box.
It didn’t take long for the Rapids U-23s to respond as Aaron Martinez slotted home a goal in the 86th minute to make the score 3-2 to the home side.
As time wound down, it started to get physical between the teams as the Rapids were searching for an equalizer. Then, in the 92nd minute, Griffin Dorsey made a run down the left sideline to find himself with a last-chance opportunity. Dorsey sent a left-footed shot at the six-yard box, but Sol’s Gasson was able deflect it away. Fortunately for the Rapids, Shinyashiki was there for the rebound and found the back of the net, salvaging a point for the Rapids.
On Saturday, Dorsey was the first to find the scoresheet in the 27th minute after capitalizing on a turnover, giving the visitors the early lead. Dorsey scored his second goal of the night in the 34th minute with a shot from near the edge of the 18-yard box giving the Rapids a 2-0 lead.
Albuquerque found the back of the net just one minute later in the 35th minute, as Luke Lawrence converted off a cross from teammate Sergio Rivas. It didn’t take long for the Rapids to find themselves ahead, 3-1, after John Haist sent a left-footed past the 'keeper in the 37th minute.
The home side picked up momentum in the 55th minute as Lawrence slid home his second goal from his teammate Noe Meza. Lawrence found himself on the scoresheet once again in the 64th minute after breaking away from the Rapids backline and tucked away his third of the night.
The game-winner came in the 74th minute as Albuquerque’s Isaiah Madrid sent shot from 20 yards out past Rapids’ goalkeeper Connor Gavigan. The Rapids were unavailable to find an equalizer and fell 4-3 for the first time this season. The Rapids U-23 still lead the Western Mountain Conference with a comfortable 21 points, while second place FC Tucson sit with 16 points.
The Rapids U-23s are back in action on Tuesday, July 3 as they face Colorado Pride Switchbacks U-23s at 4:00 PM at Weidner Stadium.
