Joe Greenspan - who has spent four years at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland - became the fifth pick in the second round of the 2015 MLS SuperDraft. The 6-foot-6 defender was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-America first team, as well as a first team All-America selection by College Soccer News and TopDrawerSoccer.com.
Greenspan was a semifinalist for the Hermann Trophy, the award that goes to collegiate soccer’s top player. He was the Patriot League’s Defensive Player of the Year and a selection to the conference’s first team all-star team. Greenspan was named to multiple player of the week honors in the Patriot League. In 2014, he became Navy's all-time leader in career games played with 78, finishing his four-year career with 75 starts, 18 goals, six assists and 6,627 minutes played.
In 2013, he was named to the NSCAA third team All-America squad, as well as the College Soccer News All-America third team. He was the 2013 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, a member of the all-Patriot League first team and Patriot League All-Tournament Team.
A forward for his first two seasons of college soccer, Greenspan had an outstanding sophomore season in 2012, leading the team in scoring with six goals and four assists, the second most for a Navy player since 2000. His 55 shots were the second most in school history, and his first two goals of the year were part of a hat trick in a 4-2 win over Lafayette. He was named to both Soccer America and CollegeSoccerNews.com’s teams of the week as a forward, as well as Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week.
Greenspan had a stellar freshman season in 2011, scoring four goals and being named Patriot League Rookie of the Week. He led the Patriot League in shot attempts (66) and was the Patriot League’s top-scoring freshman. He and teammate Sam Miller were the only Navy players to start all 19 games and his 1,418 minutes ranked fourth on the squad.
Greenspan lettered three times in soccer at Westfield High School, before graduating in 2011. He led his high school team to a county championship in 2010 and was a two-time all-county, all-conference, all-area and all-state selection at Westfield. He also lettered in basketball and swimming (the latter state champions in 2009) and was an all-conference basketball player as a senior. He played for the prestigious Match Fit Chelsea Academy FC as part of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy.
