Jermaine Jones, Tim Howard selected for U.S. 2016 Copa America preliminary roster

U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann turned in his 40-man preliminary roster for the 2016 Copa America Centenario on Sunday, May 1. Among the 40 players selected was Colorado Rapids midfielder Jermaine Jones and future Rapids goalkeeper Tim Howard, who will be joining the club from Everton later this summer.

Klinsmann has until May 20 to submit the final 23-man roster for the historic tournament that will take place in 10 cities throughout the U.S. The USMNT will begin training camp on May 16 and will work its way up to a June 3 opener against Colombia at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

Howard was selected to the goalkeepers preliminary squad along with David Bingham from the San Jose Earthquakes, Brad Guzan of Aston Villa, Ethan Horvath of Molde and Nick Rimando of Real Salt Lake. Jones was selected as one of several midfielders, including Kyle Beckerman of Real Salt Lake, Michael Bradley of Toronto FC, Mix Diskerud of NYCFC and Graham Zusi of Sporting KC, among others.

After serving a six-game suspension, Jones has had a great start to his 2016 campaign with the Rapids, tallying two goals and two assists in three games. The Rapids - with a 5-2-2 record - currently sit atop the Western Conference and Supporters’ Shield standings.
