The Colorado Rapids opened preseason play with a 1-1 draw against PDL side Ventura County Fusion on Saturday morning at Thousand Oaks, California. Forward Dominique Badji tallied the Rapids’ only goal four minutes from time after the Fusion had opened up the scoresheet just three minutes earlier.
A cagey first half saw both sides create a couple of chances, but the goals would not arrive until the last 10 minutes of play. Despite Colorado having most of the possession throughout the match, the Fusion would find themselves with the lead after Diego Casillas calmly sent his shot past an outstretched Zac MacMath.
The Rapids responded quickly with Badji leveling things up after a dangerous Mekeil Williams cross. The Fusion’s keeper initially fumbled the outswinging cross and Badji was there to pounce on the rebound. Both teams looked for the game-winner but they would have to settle for the tie.
With one month before the regular season home opener against the New England Revolution (TICKETS), the Rapids will continue their preseason camp in Thousand Oaks with a second contest against the Fusion next Wednesday, February 8. The club will then return to Denver before traveling to Tucson for the annual Desert Diamond Cup, with games against Sporting Kansas City, New England Revolution, New York City FC, and an opponent yet to be determined.
