Steve Cooke named Oklahoma City Energy FC head coach & technical director

Colorado Rapids Soccer Club announced today that Steve Cooke has been named head coach & technical director of USL side Oklahoma City Energy FC. Cooke had spent the past eight years with the Rapids, most recently as interim head coach.

“Although we are sad to see Steve go, we could not be more excited for him as he begins this new journey in his coaching career,” said Rapids Sporting Director and Interim General Manager, Pádraig Smith. “Steve’s involvement with our Academy and our first-team has been a true asset and we’re thankful for his dedication and devotion to our club. We certainly wish Steve all the best in all his endeavors and future successes.”

This past season, Cooke assumed head coach duties on an interim basis after the club parted ways with Pablo Mastroeni on August 15. In 12 games at the helm, Cooke guided the Rapids to a 3-7-2 record, including a three-game home unbeaten streak.

Cooke arrived in Colorado as the Rapids Development Academy’s Alliance Technical Director in 2010. Two years later, he would shoulder first-team coaching responsibilities under Oscar Pareja before being officially appointed first-team assistant coach in 2013, serving in that capacity until earlier this year.

“Spending the past eight seasons with the Colorado Rapids has been a truly wonderful experience,” said Cooke. “I would like to thank KSE, my colleagues on the coaching staffs, the front office, the players, and the fans for the lifelong lessons and fantastic memories through the years. I wish everyone at the club nothing but the best for 2018 and beyond.”

Prior to his eight-year tenure with the Rapids, Cooke was a member of Sheffield Wednesday’s development academy from 1990-96. He also spent a decade in Arizona as Assistant Director of Coaching for Sereno Soccer Club and SC del Sol, as well as three years as Technical Director for Neusport Football Club in Las Vegas.

A graduate of Carnegie College in England, Cooke holds the UEFA “A” Coaching License, the USSF “A” Coaching License, and recently completed the second U.S. Soccer Pro License Coaching Course.
